I will present two studies - one in the barrel cortex and one in the visual cortex - that detail surprising roles for inhibitory circuits in the neocortex. The first will address a novel translaminar inhibitory circuit between layer 4 and layer 5, which shapes spatial representations during active sensation. The second will reveal a new inhibitory mechanism for stimulus-specific long-range synchronization in the visual cortex.(video)
