They can also book the LSA large seminar room through MCB if given enough warning.

  • Title: Building a high-performance event-based silicon retina leads to new ways to compute vision
  • Abstract: This talk will describe recent developments in building a high quality spike-based temporal contrast silicon retina vision sensor and using it for vision in real-world situations. The vision sensor will be described, focusing on its emulation of the transient visual pathway in the retina and the way in which it achieves its high performance. Then the talk will turn to novel procedural algorithms for computing low-level vision (e.g. orientation, motion, stereopsis) and high-level object tracking in an event-driven way. It will be argued that the combination of neuromorphic "address-event" representation and digital computation provides a tangible path towards realization of functional neuromorphic systems with distinct advantages compared with traditional approaches.

  • Abstract: Many low-level vision algorithms assume a prior probability over images, and there has been great interest in trying to learn this prior from examples. Since images are very non Gaussian, high dimensional, continuous signals, learning their distribution presents a tremendous computational challenge. Perhaps the most successful recent algorithms are those that model image statistics with a product of potentials defined on filter outputs. However, calculating the probability of an image given these models requires evaluating an intractable partition function. This makes learning very slow and makes it virtually impossible to compare the likelihood of two different models. Given this computational difficulty, it is hard to say whether nonintuitive features learned by such models represent a true property of natural images or an artifact of the approximations used during learning. In this paper we present (1) tractable lower and upper bounds on the partition function of models based on filter outputs and (2) efficient learning algorithms that do not require any sampling. Our results are based on recent results in machine learning that deal with Gaussian potentials. We extend these results to non Gaussian potentials and derive a novel, EM algorithm for approximating the MLE filters. Applying our results to previous models shows that the nonintuitive features are not an artifact of the learning process but rather are capturing robust properties of natural images.

  • Abstract: We quantify the influence of the topology of a transcriptional regulatory network on its ability to process environmental signals. By posing the problem in terms of information theory, we may do this without specifying the function performed by the network. Specifically, we study the maximum mutual information between the input (chemical) signal and the output (genetic) response attainable by the network in the context of an analytic model of particle number fluctuations. We perform this analysis for all biochemical circuits, including various feedback loops, that can be built out of 3 chemical species, each under the control of one regulator. We find that a generic network, constrained to low molecule numbers and reasonable response times, can transduce more information than a simple binary switch and, in fact, manages to achieve close to the optimal information transmission fidelity. These high-information solutions are robust to tenfold changes in most of the networks' biochemical parameters; moreover they are easier to achieve in networks containing cycles with an odd number of negative regulators (overall negative feedback) due to their decreased molecular noise (a result which we derive analytically). Finally, we demonstrate that a single circuit can support multiple high-information solutions. These findings suggest a potential resolution of the "cross-talk" dilemma as well as the previously unexplained observation that transcription factors which undergo proteolysis are more likely to be auto-repressive.
